After talking to Kelly she pointed out some things about my first blog banner, mostly some minor changes that would help. I think this does work better; the typeface changed, which affected the layout of the type as well. I still kept all the colors and image I wanted but took the round corners out and some other small details. The new one is clearer to read and still has the 60s retro vibe, but I have the ability to add other vintage eclectic elements if I want to.
